History

The Mainsail Art Festival began in 1976 as the Saint Petersburg Sidewalk Arts and Colonial Crafts Festival, a collaboration between the city’s Bicentennial Committee, Recreation Department, and Arts Commission. Renamed Mainsail in 1977, the event emphasized its significance and waterfront location in South Straub Park. Over the years, it expanded to accommodate more activities and artists, moving to larger venues like Vinoy Park in 2004. Awards evolved from category-based to broader distinctions, with cash prizes growing from $4,200 in the early years to $50,000 by 2006. Tradition plays a significant role, with iconic symbols like the pink flamingo design and sailboat trademark enduring through time. The festival's commitment to artists is evident in initiatives like the Purchase Award, providing additional recognition and support. Alongside visual arts, Mainsail offers diverse entertainment, featuring both local talents and occasional national acts, ensuring a vibrant and enjoyable weekend for attendees.
